Homemade Dinner Rolls served in a pyrex dish

I absolutely love baking at home, and every time I pull a fresh tray of my Best Dinner Rolls – Homemade Dinner Rolls out of the oven, I feel proud of myself. Nothing compares to the smell that fills my kitchen and the soft, golden rolls that wait to be eaten. They taste incredibly delicious, and the best part is that they don’t take much effort to make. My kids always rush to the table when they see them, and their excitement makes me even happier.

I never limit these Best Dinner Rolls – Homemade Dinner Rolls to dinnertime. Sometimes I prepare them early in the morning, and we enjoy them with breakfast. I often laugh at the name “dinner rolls” because in my home they appear at any time of the day. They make a perfect snack in the afternoon or even a late-night treat when we want something warm and comforting.

For a while, I liked to stuff the rolls with cheddar or feta cheese. The melted cheese inside gave them a rich, savory flavor, and I considered that version the ultimate comfort food. Unfortunately, my daughter Aline refuses to eat cheese. She loves the plain rolls but refuses to touch them if I hide cheese inside. I sometimes feel surprised when children reject foods that taste so good, but I respect her choice. Still, I secretly hope that one day she will change her mind and enjoy cheese, especially cheddar, because it matches these rolls perfectly.

The secret to making soft, fluffy dinner rolls lies in patience. I always allow the dough to ferment for at least two hours. That waiting period feels long when I crave the rolls, but I know the dough needs time to rise and develop flavor. Once I bake them, I forget the wait because the taste rewards me with every bite. The rolls come out mushy, airy, and buttery soft exactly how I love them.

Baking these rolls has become a joyful ritual in my home. They remind me that simple ingredients, a little time, and love create food that brings family together. Nothing feels better than watching my children enjoy something I made with my own hands.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 110 g melted butter
  • ¾ cup warm whole milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • ¾ tbsp salt
  • For Egg wash:
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp milk
  • For topping:
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds optional
  • 1 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until the mixture looks foamy and fragrant.
  • Lightly beat one egg and add it to the yeast mixture. Pour in the melted butter and sprinkle in the salt.
  • Add the flour, then use the dough hook attachment to knead the dough on medium speed for about 10 minutes. The dough should feel slightly sticky yet elastic.
  • Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Brush the top of the dough with a thin layer of olive oil to prevent drying. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and set it in a warm spot. Let the dough rise for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough gently to release air. Divide it into 12 equal portions, about 70 grams each. Roll each portion into a smooth ball.
  • Arrange the dough balls evenly in a greased 13×9-inch Pyrex baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap again and let them rise for another 1 hour, or until puffy and doubled in size.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together one egg with a splash of milk. Brush this mixture generously over the tops of the rolls. For extra flavor and a beautiful finish, sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C / 350°F. Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until the tops turn a rich golden brown.
  • Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter. This step gives them a shiny appearance and makes them even softer and more flavorful.
